The Trucking Association of New York (TANY) Safety Council (TSC) develops, promotes and organizes all phases of safety and maintenance activities for the association. Comprised of safety and maintenance personnel employed by TANY members, the council serves as a resource to the association by providing training and education to the membership. Additionally, the TSC is involved in outreach efforts which help educate the public about interacting safely with trucks on the road through the Share the Road and Trucks-Eye-View programs.
The TSC also conducts the annual Truck Driving Championships and SuperTech competition for technicians, as well as recognition programs including the annual Fleet Safety Award, Golden Wrench Award and Driver of the Year Award.

Two-day courses are held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and require a class of 12-16 participants. The courses are a combination of classroom and hands-on training. A certification exam is given at the end of the second day.
Heavy Advanced Braking Systems (HABS)
This course is intended to meet the needs of the in-service heavy vehicle technician and enable the technician to service, repair, maintain and diagnose various types of heavy vehicle brake systems. The course includes an ABS module and covers regulations, brake system theory and operation, components and how they function, the impact of friction material, and how to maintain a balanced braking system. Emphasis is placed on the importance of proper repairs and inspections to meet all of today’s regulations pertaining to the brake system. Certification in Brake Repair is provided upon successful completion of the course, in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 396.25.
Fundamental Electrical & Electronics Training (FEET)
This course provides the fundamental electrical principles and hands-on experience necessary to diagnose and repair the many electronic systems found on today’s vehicles. Technicians will develop a practical knowledge of electricity, while learning to understand electrical systems and operations, identify electrical components and functions, and diagnose vehicle electrical problems. Emphasis is placed on applying theory with the use of digital multi meters on live circuit boards. Certification in Fundamental Electrical & Electronics Systems is provided upon successful completion of the course.
One-day classes are held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and require 16-20 participants. The classes are a combination of classroom and hands-on training.
Heavy Duty Braking Systems (HDBS)
This class is intended to meet the needs of the in-service heavy vehicle technician. It will enable the technician to service, repair, maintain and diagnose air brake systems, including air disc-brakes. The class covers regulations, brake system theory, operation, and various system components and how they function. Emphasis is placed on the importance of proper repairs and inspections required to meet all of today’s regulations pertaining to the brake system. This class does not include and ABS module.
Four-hour training classes can be held at various times during a day. A minimum number of attendees is required for these classes, depending on the topic.
Heavy Duty Brake Adjustment Class (HDBA)
This class is intended for drivers and other personnel to meet brake adjustment requirements. This class covers basic understanding of an air brake system in order to instill the importance of a properly functioning brake system.
This 4-hour class is designed to show the importance of a good preventative maintenance program and its impact on a company’s CSA score. Included in the class is familiarization with CSA and the severity of various violations, what to expect at roadside inspections, and how to equip technicians and drivers with good preventative maintenance skills so problem areas are addressed before they become violations at roadside inspections.
